The Veg Patch

One way of knowing what you’re eating is to know what’s seasonal and where it’s come from.

It’s also the way to eat well.

I’ve had an allotment for over eight years. It’s an oasis of sanity.

You get out only what you put in. Hard work spent digging on days when it’s down to freezing and the earth is like iron and the skies are like lead.

The planting of seeds that won’t deliver a result for six months but still need careful tending all the way.

The grass cutting, the edge trimming, repairing the nets and clearing out drainage.

And then the summer with the need to weed, to water and to keep on top of all the jobs.

Anyone who writes about food needs to try growing it too.

It literally grounds you.
